I am just getting started in the machining hobby and am looking for someone who can help me avoid some pitfalls.

Steve: I hope you knew about (PRIME) -Pacific Rim International Model Exposition, at the Lane County Fairgrounds last weekend. Several people were there from the area and had their models on show- it was a great show. One local club is the Portland Model Engineers Club, they have a website on the internet and may be able to help you find some fellow homeshop machinists or PRIME has a web site also and the fellows listed were kind to me when I asked questions so I'm sure they would be of help to you also.<font face="Verdana, Arial" size="2">Originally posted by lafngrvy:

Don,
Yes I did attend PRIME. As the kids say today "Way Cool!" It was very educational, and a great encouragement to see the level of skill and craftsmanship displayed at the show.
I live about 75 miles from Portland, so I am afraid that the Portland clubbers might find it difficult to be of much assistance, other than over the phone.

The Home Shop Machinst web page lists the
EMERALD VALLEY MODEL ENGINEERING SOCIETY
Eugene, OR
Ram Maier (541) 741-3045
Which of course is an easier drive for you than Portland.
Also, you might go up to Antique Powerland at the Brooks exit from I-5 and do some networking there. All sorts of toys there, ranging from 1:8 scale trains to full sized steam traction engines.
