Punch Press
I recently purchased a small Benchmaster punch press. It is model 23, 2 ton I beleive.
I can't seem to locate punches and dies for this machine. I have made adapters to use cnc punch press tooling, however this is very expensive.I also made attempts at making my own punchs and dies. The punchs were no problem, the dies were another matter. Anyone know where I can get direct tooling for this machine? Also last note, I need shaped dies-- Square, rectangle, double and single "D" especially.
thanks

Call an industial machinery dealer they may have punches & dies. I am not familiar with that machine, but you may have to buy a tool set to mount your punches in - punches & dies do not take kindly to misalignment. Some of the Roper-Whitney punches might work, and Amada in Canada can make or has anything you could think of (for a turret punch). The Subminature D punches are not cheap. Greenlee may still have ko tools (Knock Out tools for electricians) for the Sub-D.
If you make your own dies you could use 4130 or 4140 as they should be tough enough for aluminum or light steel. You have to adjust the punch clearance depending on the material being punched - heavy gage steel will require greater clearance. With a smaller press like yours it may require you to step the punch to reduce pressure.
Cast ureathane rubber around the punch can be used as a stipper in some applications and works very well.
Good luck
Dave
