Just purchased a Steptoe Shaper looking for operators manual. Does anyone know where I can get a copy of one? Thanks.

I can provide a copy of a Steptoe shaper manual but it is for one of the later models after the company became Western Machine Tool Works. This means that the machine has more features than the earlier models such as a clutch, power down feed, power rapid traverse etc. The 16 inch machine I have is an old flat belt drive model with none of those features but the basics in the newer manual still apply. For how to run a shaper you will find 4 books from lindsaybks.com to be well worth the $30 total price. These are Shaper Operations, Shapers by Stieri, How to run a Shaper and Drill Press, and Production Shaping. The last one has photos of several Steptoe shapers in use. Email me your postal address and I will send on the manual copy if that will work for you. Alan
Alan,
I've got an OLD Steptoe sitting outside shop door, not room inside. I bought it last year in a package deal and it had been sitting outside for 10 years or more already so don't get on to me.
This machine was a lineshaft machine, now has a model A Ford transmission and a Westinghouse motor. The stroke is adjustable through the door with wrench. Not externally adjustable like the Flather I bought at the same time, it got to come inside.
Anyway it's ancient, I noticed the other day that it had a Western Machine Tool Works tag on it.
?
your steptoe is different than mine, as mine has adjustment for stroke outside machine. This one had just been used on a job at the shop were purchased. Machinist was making room for a new machine probably a miller. He is also selling an awsome cincinnati #3 horizontal miller $1400 if anyone in Alaska is interested it is large and heavy and would cost a lot to ship anywere else<font face="Verdana, Arial" size="2">Originally posted by halfnut:
