Post How Do I Remove A Spindle Shaft On A 9B SouthBend

I want to go ahead and completely dissasemble the head stock but cant figure out how to remove the spindle. I don't see any "caps" that would hold the bearings in place. Theres one bolt one each side that crushes the bearing. Any body know how this is done?

To quote from SBL chart 6514, Remove (2) bull gear guards, Remove reverse bracket assy. Loosen clamp screw on take up nut, remole nut and thrust washer.drive out spindle using a lead or babbitt hammer or a wood block Drive toword the threaded end of spindle. When spindle is being removed from head, the thrust bearing, cone and bull gear will fall out so be careful not to nick or damage these parts.
When reinstaling, place a piece of wire into bearing breather hole to hold dowh oil wicks on both bearings.
To replace spindle reverse the procedure outlined above, taking care to press the bull gear onto the spindle-do not drive it on. Be very careful not to get dirt into the bearings.
Hope this helps, (spelling mistakes are mine)

Well, after lots of WD-40 and the use of a press, I finally got it off. Some rust made it a little sticky. The ball bearings are rusted badly. Can you still order parts for these lathes. I'm also gona need to replace the halfnuts.

What ball bearings? DOesn't the 9B have journal bearings? You mean the thrust bearing?
Your best bet for parts may be one of the used machinery dealers (Meridian Machinery, Dave Sobel, Plaza Machinery, others) who advertise in HSM.

SGW is correct, What ball bearings? I just looked in the SBL parts book and can't find any either. Where do they go and what do they do? (now i'm curious).

I should have said the thrust washer assembly. Anytime I see "little steel balls in a cage" I think ball bearings, my bad. I just one the high bid on a good used thrust assembly and split nut. All I need now is a set of decent halfnuts.
