Looking to buy a gear head lathe. $3k to spend.
Thinking of going w/ the Smithy CZ 239.
Dose any one here own one ? if so what do think ?
or would I get better quality w/ a Grizzly or Birmingham ?
Please help, I'm really under the gun to get one. and I've been
reading & reading, but not getting any clear answers.
You will probably get more opinions if you post links and make it easy for people to compare.
I see nothing inherently wrong with the Smithy machine, but I would be more inclined to go with one of the other manufactures you listed. You will probably get a slightly better machine for less money.
This is probably their best selling machine in this class:
A little heavier:
This Grizzly gives an impressive ‘bang for the buck’:
What Birmingham are you looking at?
I have the Grizzly G4003 gear head. I really like it but I cannot compare it to the other lathes you mentioned as I have never owed one of those. At one time I owned a Atlas 6" lathe, a Atlas 10 inch with quick change, and a 7x12 mini lathe. The Grizz is the one I like best. I only use it in a hobby shop but it sure works good there! I have a friend that has this same lathe, he makes steel guitars, he likes his grizzly also. We did both fit our lathes with Shooting Star DROs, not necessay but nice!

I'm looking at these, wondering about quality.
these are the 3 that keep comming up. I have 2 smithy machines now.
they seem to run great for 3 yrs. than crap out. Smithy is great at getting
you new parts a.s.a.p. but every replacment part seem to fail w/ in 30 day ?
I just don't know if any of these other companys are any better.
