    Default My first real gears

I have made some small thin pointy tooth gears using a tap and jig but these are my first attempt at making real gears. I think they came out very well.

Need them for the little Lewis mill that I got from Dan. Progeress has been slow but it is moving along.

I had thought that I would just use aluminum but after looking at the situation and seeing how little metal there is on the one I decided to use aluminum bronze instead.

The one original gear that I have for a copy is made of phenolic, guess that is why the one was missing.

    Ross,
it maybe the picture but they don't look to be cut deep enough from here.
Have you checked the depth with a couple of pins or across three teeth ?

Ross, nice work! Other than what Sir John mentioned they look excellent!
No half teeth, no false teeth...I likey
I can't wait to start cutting gears again myself. It's sorta like getting hooked on crack (or something).

Ya I know they don't look right, even in real life. Double checked the book and also compaired to the old one. that's the way they are supposed to be.

    Thanks Ross

Ross, what are the 4 pin holes for on the one?
Are they to be threaded or are they locator pins?

    What are the gears for?

Other than the back gear setup, and the knee bevel gears, I don't think there are any other gears on mine.

Do you have a power feed?

Torker- The pin holes are for 4 small mild steel pins(nail) that hold the gear to another coller that is set screwed to the shaft.

J Tiers The gears are both small gears for the back gears.

    Ross,
Those gears look good. I'm glad to hear your progress is steady, even if a little slow.

I know it can be very rewarding when you actually get something out of your time spent in the shop (and I work in a shop all day). I'm really looking forward to both seeing the mill completed, and seeing what you make with it.

So, did you make them on the Lewis? That would naturally be sweet.....

And, I had forgotten yours was the one other Lewis I ever heard of that has back gears....
