    Smile AH Well

The other problem in my shop is the actual ceiling height of the well the ceiling, My b port mill just barelfits in side. If i have to remove the drawbar (yeah go ahead and laugh) i have to tilt the head like quite a bit sideways to make it happen. How high are the boss bport mills?? If it would fit i could see getting one would be the nicest learning exercise doing your own cnc control retrofit. Mike

    Default B'port retrofit

    Sir,

If you do consider replacing your present mill with a CNC'd Bpt, go to
    www.outbackmachineshop.com, and see his shop.

He redid a later model, and knows of another similar to his which is for sale.

    Regards,
    Jack C.

Mike, my Tree is shorter than a regular B'port style mill as the motor is mounted "spindle end up" in side the chassis instead of on top of the machine.

Lots of other CNC mills were just too tall to fit in my garage.

    cheers,
    Michael

You will be a lot better off finding an older CNC knee mill and using it as is or updating the controls. Just converting over to ball screws is a big dollar upgrade, then you have big servos or steppers, geckos, etc... to buy and it gets expensive. I have a BP boss 5 servo and gecko conversion and just bought a Hurco SM1 with factory controls. Both machines basically went for the cost of the included toolholders. Take your time and you can find a nice machine.
