    Default Backgear Chatter

    Do lathes in general make more noise on the backgears? Just a general impression .....

    Yep, if you want to have the gears run quiet try using an open gear lube. It looks like tar and comes in a tube that you put in a caulking gun. Just don't get it on you or your clothes.

    I use 80 90 rearend lube and just pour it all over the gears. Seems to protect and quiet em down a bit

    Don't some of those back geared lathes have a method of adjustment? I have a vague memory of a back gear shaft mounted in eccentric bushings that could be rotated to adjust the clearnce between the gears.

    My 11" Logan is as DR suggests. I was 5-6 teeth away when I 1st got engagement and gradually brought it down to "one to far" where it started binding. Backed it up one tooth from there and we'll see what happens when I spin it up.

    Got 90wt gear lube on both pairs but I can tell they're gonna be noisy just spinning by hand. Awesome torque from the reduction tho. Wow! That's gonna be hard to stop.....

    They are regular spur gears, so you can count on noise. if they were opposed helical gears, they would be quieter.

    I know mine are very slightly misaligned on my model 200 Logan..... Plus they either are too tight, or have excess backlash, your choice, due to the engagement of the backgear slide plunger.

    Even so, they seem considerably quieter than the change gears. Those make a bunch of noise, especially at higher RPM when threading finer threads.

    You kinda put up with it or not....... The nice thing is that if the "click" of an "alligator" spliced belt annoys you, the gears drown it out

    Hi There,

    If your Logan is like mine, you can adjust the engagement by modifying the
    length of the locking paw in the underside of the backgear engagement shaft.
    Either set-up "one-too-far" and file the paw shorter or make a new, longer
    paw for your current set-up.

    If you go the new longer paw route, You can estimate the extra length
    needed by removing the stop collar on the end of the engagement rod and
    pull the rod out until the proper gear engagement is achieved. Then measure
    the distance from the end of the paw to the headstock casting. This will
    give you the addition length the new paw needs to made (over the old one).

    If you cannot get proper engagement using the current eccentric gear -
    engagement rod (by using a longer paw), you will have to re-adjust the
    eccentric gear - engagement rod so that the back gears come up tight
    when engaging and shortenning the locking paw so that the gear mesh
    is correct.

    Yeah Webb, I've got the same spring loaded paw on the bottom on the engagement shaft on my Logan. Never even thought about adjusting it's length for a "half-a-tooth!" That'd work.

    When I 1st found this poor machine the back gears were engaged on the wrong side of the eccentric. You had to push the shaft IN to engage. With no spring loaded paw to hold them some dummy rigged a loose plate from above to swing down and keep the shaft "loosely" held against the headstock.

    It was ugly.
