Default Asian goodies....... NOT.... MT3 E.M. adapter

Looks like teh asians have chased Bison out of Victor Machinery.

    V. M. may be NOT recommended any more..... they used to be good, selling nice Bison stuff that was well made.

Got a 1/2" MT3 end mill adapter from them last week. Every one of these things I have ever seen has a 3/8-16 drawbar.

Not this no-name but presumably asian beauty...... When I went to use it, I found it has what appears to be a 1/2-13 drawbar thread. And not a nice clean thread, either.

What the %^$#@! is up with THAT?

I have given them the opportunity to replace with a good one, threaded as they state on teh website.....we'll see.

Grrrrrrrrr....... I didn't buy the %^%$#@ thing to look at, I expected it to be usable with standard tooling, AS STATED..... Kinda needed to use it.

Ok, ok, I'm done ranting, it's Ok to return to the normal program now.

    Note.....

The thread appears to be something metric very close to 1/2 inch, with a 2.0mm pitch. I don't think Victor got what they wanted. I know I didn't.

FWIW the 3MT metric collets sold here (anyway the ones I have) are threaded 1/2W (1/2-12) and the imperial ones are 3/8W (3/8-16). I'd suspect you might have scored a 1/2 Whitworth collet.

It sounds like one of the Chicom universal threads that won't fit anything. These are usually fitted with a matching universal socket head set screw which any known Allen wrench will immediately round out, rendering it impossible to remove.

There is method in that. That's so your cheap Allen wrenches will last more than one use.

The Chicom universal Allen wrenches are soft enough to deform in the setscrew, and in the process of rounding out the setscrew, they also round off themselves. You can sometimes remove the setscrew with these, however you will end up with it fused to the end of the wrench.

If it is a M12 x 1.75, which some have suggested, it is mighty strange, as 12mm should not admit a 0.5 inch screw (12.7mm dia).

It measures a good 2mm pitch also, which is quite non-standard for 12mm, but fine for 14mm.

Since it admits a 1/2-13 screw for several turns, a 2mm pitch (12.7 TPI) thread seems to be what it is. If it were 12 TPI, I'd expect it to jam up faster.

In any case, whatever it is, it isn't as advertised. Sure is annoying to find out when you grab it to use.... and find you haven't got (nor probably do many folks have) a drawbar to fit it....

Some guy in india probably fouled up. The chinese would have got it right.
