Default Where to find gear tooth vernier calipers?

Looking for something priced in the home shop range. Looked at some of the Starret stuff but not willing to part with enough cash to pay the new price. What other options are out there besides gambling on ebay?

    Brian.

There was an excellent one on eBay (continuous sell as I recall - quite a few - not a "one off") that was the subject of a "gearing" thread in the last 2 months or so.

John Stevenson had one he brought back from China.

The ones on eBay were or seemed to be identical.

They were very good and very cheap as I recall.

I would guess that Lazlo and John Stevenson - at least - will have the link you require.

Perhaps you could PM them or more likely at least one of them will see this thread/post and will come up with the information you require.

I can't remember the thread topic or else I'd have searched it out for you.

I'd be interested to see the post/thread and the calipers again as well.

Try Ebay.co.uk they don't seem to fetch much here at the moment.
There have been a couple of sets go for about £12 to £14 [ $24 to $28 ] and shipping shouldn't be much on these.

I have a set of digital ones, like two 4" digital calipers at 90 degrees. There was one guy here going to bring them in but other than sample ones it never came off.

    Sorry John.

    You are right - again.

I must have got carried away with the moment.

Vernier it is that is required by the Original Poster.

Digital it was on the thread mentioned. A far far better caliper as I recall - quality-wise and price-wise as well.

Can you please post the link to the thread with the digital gear caliper.

    Thanks.

Now that that is cleared up...
Brian, Why on earth would you want a Vernier this day and age?
And Just how does a geared Vernier work?I have never seen one.

Note that this is for 10 to 1 DP, probably a copy of the Starrett "A" model. Most of us home shop types are more interested in the "B" (or maybe its the other way around) model with a range of 2 to 20 DP.

Why would I want verniers rather than digitals? My grandkids could be using the verniers decades after the digitals have died. And because there's no battery to go dead.

    Default Why Vernier?

For the reasons that Jeff mentioned. I only make gears occasionally so most of the time the calipers will just sit. I have also had some bad luck with digitals lately. I bought a new mitutoyo waterproof digimatic and have had trouble with it holding zero. I thought the mitutoyo would be good stuff. They don't seem to be any better than my cheap chinese digital calipers.

I'm surprised that the china knock offs of the Starret stuff are so pricey. I guess that it must be the lack of demand. I will have to do what sir John suggested and check ebay U.K. The U.K. price he mentioned is more inline with what I think I need.

    Default Gear tooth caliper

    Iwolf,
You use it when making gears it is used for the testing of gear teeth. The vertical scale measures the depth of teeth from the top to the pitch line, and the horizontal scale measures the thickness of teeth in the pitch line.
    Non, je ne regrette rien.

Thanx Chief, that makes sense now , I was thinking of the gear and rack in the caliper and never saw one on a Vernier or a digital for that matter. Brain Fart I guess.
