Electric Magnets

Can anyone suggest a book or a web link that tells how to make and/or design electromagnets? I was hoping to find something that would give formulas etc. I tried the local library but had no luck.

How big? How much weight does it have to hold? What kind of power source? Why re-invent the wheel? There's many sources for electro-magnets. (relays, solenoids, door holders, etc.)

Ohojim on ebay had a pretty good book for sale.. Lots of reprints, he has a bridgeport in dusty state in his garage, a pretty nice guy.
