I was scounging around here at work and found a nice .0001 dial gage made by Mercer, St. Albans. It looked to be a very high quality item, and probably rare here in the US. In the back of my memory, I thought that they kinda had a legendary status, if a a dial gage could have such a thing. I would hope that some of our British friends might have some background or stories about them.
