    Default TIG Cast welding tips?

    Hi Everyone,

I have a small project here. Going to try and repair a small vice. It would probably be cheaper to just buy a new one, given the cost of Cast filler rod, but where would the fun be in that!

My "Gas Tungsten Arc Welding Handbook" does not have a section on welding cast. Any tips?

    Just a small educational project.

    Thanks
    Jim

i've used phosphor bronze with some success but not on a vice. . . im thinking you would be better with nickel rod and a good arc welder. . . pre-heat, post heat and peen the crap out of it as you weld. . .

    Default Tig cast

You can cold weld cast iron with Tig! Keep the welds short, -1 inch or less!-do not let the peice get hot! Plenty of angles for weld bonding. Peen. If you can not put your hand against the weld a minute or so after you are done peening you are welding too long!

Good luck. It will probably break again.

I would recommend dual shield mig with something like Lincoln 91K2H wire.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...r/IM002233.jpg here is a photo of a cast iron pump I tig welded with 308 stainless. I was told by another welder that 314L is a better choice. This was welded on DC with 100% argon with 100 amps and a 2% thoriated electrode.

I have had good luck tig brazing with silicon bronze rod.
And I have also had pretty good luck tig welding cast iron with Nickel rod.
But the Nickel really costs a fortune.
It works well, though, without pre and post heat.
