today project , project milling vice
well i picked this vice up , i needed a smaller vice for some stuff and i got no bucks for a milling vice this size right now so i fiquire it was mod time so on the mill she went, i know this is no big deal to most guys here but for some guys that are just into machining this might help out to make a milling vice out of a regual vice this one is more the strong enough and will be now suitable so be mounted easy on angles as well that my present larger vice cant do anyhow enjoy the pics

Looks like a small Palmgren? IMO the best tools are the ones you make (or re-make) yourself. Nice job on giving the old vise a second chance.
I have an old cast iron Stanley tilting vise base that I pulled out of the scrap bin at work. It took many hours to clean it up, flycut it square, and modify it to hold a 4x4 tooling plate, but now I have a small tilting table that is better than one I could afford to buy new. I get more satisfaction out of building tools than I do running for-profit jobs.

I should really learn to do better before and after pictures. Oh well here is my shot at repairing vises – we all must have vises. I hate it when people drill into perfectly good working vises simply for lack of care.

after all the parts have an initial clean up I’ll end up welding up all the oppsies with Ni rod, followed by many hours of file work and precision grinding.

on this 1 some of the original bolts were so rusted in place I had to drill the originals out and re-make them. Never did figure out why B&S used a ½ x 14tpi.

I’ll go from welder to file to grinder several times before I get all the drill holes, peck holes, and low spots out of the bed. Once that is done I’ll spend the better part of a day grinding the entire bed and base until I have it very parallel

until the finish product looks like this

given my budget is a low one the last while i do my best to make stuff work the way i need it to. and this was a cool idea for me. i needed a smaller vice that i could use on angles that my regual vice is to big for and i wanted it to be able to mount as rigid as possible as well ,, the next project is to make a vice completly from scratch, i gota few ideas in my head just got make them a reality. i fiquire i gota few days work ahead of me but in the end iam sure it will be worth it,
i think iam getting a bad ich to make lots of tools now,....
