    Jeez - which one? Dangerous open circuit voltage on the rod, no eye or body protection, the "electrician" is living on the edge... Where to stop?

    I think the "Welder" itself is a big power resistor. Basically the same thing as those cheap little tin welders they used to sell. All that was inside it was a coil heating element to limit the current. Had a lot of fun with one as a kid melting rocks with carbon arc rods in the holder!
