Thread: Speaking of Bender Plans

    Default Speaking of Bender Plans

I have a project coming up that will require bending of "hoops" if you will. I will need to produce about a 4' diameter hoop out of 1/2 conduit. I am sure there is a device built for such a task, but is it something I can build? I would look it up and see, but I do not know what to call it. I have lathe, mill etc.. and a fearless attitude about building things. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

It's called a ring roller. You'll need dies for pipe if you want it to stay reasonably round. You'll also need two joints. Conduit comes in 10-foot lengths. Biggest circle is only 3.2 feet. 20-foot exists, but it's really hard to get.

1/2" conduit is very soft and can easily be bent in a wide diameter like 4' by hand around a plywood disk form. It will, however, require conduit that is more than 12 1/2 ft long to do it in one piece and I believe the standard length is 10 ft. meaning you will have to piece it together. I have done this before.

    Search the barnes roller..
http://bbssystem.com/viewtopic.php?t=1364 Download pdf from here.. I cut and pasted the pages with the build he did.. popped it into Openoffice.org and then made a pdf from the webpages. No claim to his build.. I just documented it to share with his permission.

I got mine a lil further along this week.. Madman had me a dozen rollers ground round and polished.. I needed two sets.. I got a set for turning one inch tube and the other set is still flat..

Using HSM "how to cut keyways on a shaper" published here on this site,http://bbs.homeshopmachinist.net/sho...keyways+shaper I cut the keyways with my 7" southbend shaper.. Doug? I forget.. but I also made a pdf of that lil page of information for my own library..

MY real machinist buddy up there in Canuck land where the antelope run wild and free.. he was having trouble pushing a broach through them big 4140 rollers.. the shaper made light work of it.. SLOW AS heck.. but did just fine.. scraping a lil bit each stroke.. after I made the fourth series of tool holder for it... ha...

Anyways, my tube roller will be automated.. I'll have a sketch pad to sketch into.. Single shot.. eventually, if I live long enough.. if.. I ever get around to completing it.. if'n..
    Excuse me, I farted.
