Default Brown and Sharp tapered endmills

I have quite a bit of Brown and Sharp endmill cutters, don't know the taper number right now but was wondering if anyone would be interested in trading.I need a steady rest for a Clausing 1500 lathe.I will take one that is modified to fit my lathe but the center hole needs to be around 5.00" or bigger. Thanks

I can't help you, but perhaps you could answer a question. I got a few tapered endmills in an assortment I bought at auction. What are the tapered ones used for?

I suspect Mike's endmills are B&S taper shank. They were used early on, but have fallen out of use.

Endmills with tapered flutes are use most often for milling mold cavities where a draft is required to make it easier for the finished part to be extracted from the mold.

I assume those endmills have no drawbar hole in the small end of the taper.....

Which begs the question of how they didn't fall out?

Most Morse tapers will release under the vibration inherent in using an endmill, sooner or later. The B&S taper is a little different, but both are "self holding" tapers......

Most of these cutters do have the drawbar threaded hole.

I believe their tendency to fall out of the milling machine played a very large part in their falling out of favor. Some did have a drawbar thread, but others had only the driving tang.

Yeah, that and the fact that you paid for the taper shank on every cutter, but actually didn't need but one...... and you had to knock it out and put in another to change sizes..........hence the advent of the end mill holder.

MikeP...... I've never seen one with a drawbar hole, all the ones I have ever seen have tangs. Of course that is about a dozen examples only.......

    Default B&S End MIlls

The B&S end mills have a taper on the shank that goes into the spindle adapter. The cutter is held in place with a Cam-Lock arrangement and a draw bar. I have a collection of B&S end mills (approx 40 lbs) with the tapered shank that I need to sell. A few are new in the box and many have been sharpened.

You need to say what B & S taper they are.
    usually they are a #7 or a #9
    7 is a bit smaller than a Morse #2
9 is near a #3 Morse in size

7 's can be used by some guys with odd M heads on old Bridgeports
9's were used on some larger mills

You will be lucky to get 25 cents a piece for them

    I have a Sheldon H mill that uses B&S 9.

I'd be interested in looking at any 9 tooling.
