A Couple of Recent Projects

Here are a couple of my recent projects;





The revolver is a work in process. It is a Ruger Single Six. I picked it up a couple of weeks ago as a gunshow derelict with thoughts of rechambering it to 327 Magnum. I have put that on a back burner and decided to just clean up the original 22.

It had the 6-1/2" barrel with the original clunky Ruger front sight. I turned and fitted a heavier 4-5/8" barrel and made a new front sight that is more appealing to me. The barrel is still in the white as I intend to clean up the rest of the gun and replace the grips prior to refinishing it.

The rifle is a clunker Iver Johnson Champion 410 that I grafted a surplus, demilled 303 Enfield barrel on and chambered to the 327 Magnum. The 327 Magnum is an interesting cartridge and the chambering will accomodate all of the cartridges in the 32 S&W family,

That Single Six looks so much better with the larger barrel and front sight, does not look like the same gun.

The 338-06 is not a long range cartridge but it is a pretty heavy hitter without having to go to a magnum case. I didn't want to have to open up the bolt face. I also wanted to have a case that would fit in the existing magazine without too much modification. I had to get in the magazine and remove a little at the rear to allow the rounds to fit but not much. So with a 250gr bullet I can get them up around 2400 feet/sec to give me around 3200 ft-lbs. I spent some time truing up the front of the receiver, lapping in the bolt lugs and truing the bolt face. It seemed to pay off. I was able to get this group:



It's a junky phone picture so if you can't see the ruler it is about 1" edge to edge so about 0.7" for the group.

i am unfamiliar with the 327. is that based on a 22 frame or a 32 in the single six? Looks like something that would be fun to try.

Thanks Ken, the heavier barrel changes the handling qualities of the gun very nicely.

The 327 magnum is a stretched 32 H&R magnum. It was developed by Federal and as far as I know Ruger is the only manufacturer offering it at present. They chamber their SP 101 in it, a small frame double action.

The round duplicates, to a large extent the old 32-20 in the higher pressure loadings and can equal 357 magnum power in some loadings. It is a natural for a single action revolver, but only Bowen and a couple of other custom smiths are offering it at present, either on the Single Six or Blackhawk frames.

I have been playing around with an old Colt in 32-20, but it is very limited to pressure, and the 327 conversion looked interesting. The single shot rifle will have to satisfy me for now though.

The Single Six frame is the same size for 22 or 32 H&R magnum, and Bowen will be offering a longer cylinder to adapt them in the near future. I had thoughts of using this gun as a donor, but changing from a rimfire to centerfire is problematic for me. It looks like the only methods are either to tap and plug the existing hole and redrill or weld it up and redrill. I am leary of potential weakening of the frame by drilling a second hole in this location and don't have the means to weld it up.

now that would be something i'm interested in. i have a lot of 32 H&R Mag brass and load it for use it in a Marlin lever action (i think Marlin only made it for two years). a single-action revolver that would handle 32 H&R and the 327 Mag you mention would be a nice compliment.

Andy,
The 32 H&R mag revolver is just a sweet shooter and I agree would be a perfect complement to your lever. Owning a gun store for many years and having owned and shot virtually all of the calibers the 32 H&R mag is still my favorite, not for the power but for the overall pleasure.

50 BMG and shoots great.
