    Default Useful as Parallels

Was in Lee Valley store (Canada) the other day and noticed this set of a 1-2-3 block and some anodized aluminum bars.

There is only a single bar of each size. If I purchased 2 sets would the pair of, for eg, the 1/2-inch square ones act as a pair of parallels? Or, as I suspect, might I get - by random selection - one bar with the + tolerance and the other with the minus? Any way to determine?

    Just a bad idea?

Did you ever check two pieces of ground HSS tool blanks from the SAME batch?? And tough as anodised Alumininininium may seem, it won't take a beating.

    Regards Ian.
You might not like what I say,but that doesn't mean I'm wrong.

Is 'Veritas' engraved into the face of those aluminum bar thingies? Just what you need - engraving on something that's supposed to be flat and smooth.

These ChiCom parallels are cheaper than the Veritas product and claim to be more accurate at +-.0008".

Each pair potentially being off by up to .0016 seems like a lot since these are set-up tools.

Yes but these are meant to set up woodworking tools so I think the accuracy is quite adequate.

In my experience they're not always even flat, never mind parallel (or square, if 'square' toolbits)
