    Default south bend lathe questions

Anybody know if it is possible to replace a threaded spindle on an older machine, like a 9 or a 16 with a cam lock? Does anyone know if a single tumbler gearbox can be replaced with a double tumbler and where one might be found? Does anyone have a good idea of how to mount a horizontal drive above or below the lathe to take up less space? Thanks

Sounds like you just need to upsize to a bigger/better lathe

Some of the 10" SB lathes had a D1-4 cam lock spindle,

Default Single Tumbler vice Double Tumbler Box

The gearing between the spindle and the tumbler box is different. The gearing used by the single tumbet box is NOT the same as the gearing for the double tumbler box. Changing between a single and double tumbler box is not a trivial process. A lot more has to be changed that just the tumbler boxes, even if they would fit identically!
