Thread: threading a tapered shaft ?

  1. #1

Post threading a tapered shaft ?

Hers one for you old timers. I need to turn and thread about one inch on the end of a tapered shaft, How do i chuck it and keep it true, Do i simply tighten the three jaw down on it and hold the end in a live center? This seems like it would be a bit unstable since the contact area would be so small with the chuck. and if it should slip would ruin the spindle.

Either use a taper attachment or hold between centers with a lathe dog and use the tailstock setover method.

As per JCH. Also, set up the threading tool referenced to the parallel to the portion of the shaft, not the tapered portion.

Is this a straight portion of the shaft or do you actually want to thread a tapered section?

Either way it can be done between centers. Depending on how the treads are to be done will dictate you set up. Check in Machinery's Handbook on pipe threads - this will get you started.
