odds&ends hit & miss engine

I am a rank amature at computers &this forum .After 10 years of off &on learning how to operate my inherited lathe &mill I built a copy of P.Duclos engine . WOW it runs! Carburetion is not right though. It only runs rightwhen the fuel level in the tank is adjusted level with the needle valve. I read about using a check valve . Does this work? I saw an engine on AOL that had a smalltank under the carb but no details were given as to any other mods.Iwould appreciate any advice .Thank
