Micarta wheel

yes, it is time for another micarta/garolite thread.

I have a micarta ring 2.75" in diameter that is 3/8" thick and wide. I want the alphabet around the outer edge. Can micarta be machined smooth enough to allow writing? Writing is my last choice... is it engravable? Or am I better served with an adhesive label?

Assuming laminated, you can definitely polish the perif. but you will always be looking at some kind of uneven grain.

Engraving and filling with a solid color will be very readable.

Setting on a thin wall tube is a possibility.

Wrapping with a label is a possibility, and a decent printer will do a fine job with text at almost any angle.

Evan used mylar strips I think, as cover over a paper strip.

I've had excellent results with sealing the 'end grain' of micarta using low viscosity epoxies. If the micarta is warmed up quite a bit before the epoxy is applied, then allowed to cool as the epoxy cures, bubbles won't form and the epoxy seems to be drawn into the micarta.

I know micarta is supposed to be 'solid' but it worked for me.

I'd say it's solid if the resin permeates entirely the substrate material.

Now, how well does micarta take a thread?
