Default OT: I'm back and what I've been working on...

Got me a new hobby. I was given a 1994 Town And Country for $10 plus tags and such.

Been banging away on it working on the sheetmetal, derusting it and adding filler and correcting dents. Lots of fun.

My question involves car audio systems. The original "Infinity Package" speakers are toast, someone/something caused them to melt and rupture.

I'm looking through the online sources and I see "Three Way" and "Four Way" speakers. What does that mean?

    Dodge?
If so you have the most expensive domestic family car transmission in the US. Count on it failing at around 125,000 miles.

    Hi Liger,

It means more that one speaker in the "speaker" so you could have a 6 inch base with a mid and tweeter mounted in front of it. Probably also includes a crossover.

The thing in the middle of the cone is two more speakers.

Have fun with that project car!

It's a Chrysler Town And Country, which means it also comes in a Dodge and Plymouth version.

Transmission has 210,000 on it, and it works fine. I dropped it out and sent it in to a trusted Transmission Spook, he's going to work his magic on it to make sure it stays good.

Engine has a check engine light that comes on during stop-and-go driving. That's on the list to be checked when I get my hands on the scanner.

Other than that the inside is near-mint. Smells like tobacco smoke and sour milk but the wife-unit insists she can fix that.

Most of the work centers around fixing rust rot and repainting.

I have my normal daily commute car, this is more of a for-fun project. Why a Town And Country? 'cause it was free.

Question regarding rust removal... I got busy with other things and am now back at work on the van.

Do these rust removal gels work? Claim all I have to do is slap some on wait and then rinse it off.

It would beat grinding, but then again I know the grinding does the job. Not sure if I want to play with chemicals that may or may not do the job.

The rust removal gels fall in two categories, naval jelly, which is hydrochloric acid and rust converters, which are phosphoric acid. The naval gelly dissolves rust much faster than iron and it does work. You must make sure it is completely rinsed off. The phosphoric acid treatments convert red rust to black oxide, most of which will wash off. It stops the rust and makes a good surface for painting or bondo provided you very completely clean off the loose material after treating.

I prefer the phosphoric acid since if any is left behind it won't promote more corrosion. The cheapest way to buy phosphoric acid is to go to to a greenhouse supplier and pick it up there by the quart. It comes in 80% strength and to use you dilute it two or three to one. It's use to reduce pH in hydroponic gardening.
