Default New Mill, Finally and Big Steel

Well, I finally got delivery, sorta, of my Grizzly G0484 after waiting about 9 months. I say "sorta" because I had it dropped off at a local company which does machinery moving. I was not able to lift it (3 feet above ground) into my shop myself. They should be delivering it to me tomorrow if the rain stops. I hope to take some pictures of the arrival. So far, I have only seen the crate so I am anxious to lay eyes and hands on the actual machine. More later.

But for the Big Steel part of the title. I went to the company where it was delivered this morning to discuss the final delivery and had to wander through one of their buildings to fine the right guy. It is a fairly large factory building they took over from a company that did things like cranes and monorails. As I walked between two rows of various machines that were larger than my truck, I spotted a stack of steel parts on the floor. Don't know what they were but they were machined and had three large holes in them. The SMALLEST dimension, the thickness was 12 inches or more. They must have been about 12 feet long and three or feet wide. Heaven only knows what they weigh. I think there were 8 or 10 of them. Just one of them is more steel in one lump than I will probably use in my entire life. I'm sorry I didn't have time to ask what they were and if they could part with one for a dozen donuts or two. Probably for the best as it wouldn't fit in my truck; heck, it would flatten my truck. If I go back, I will definitely take my camera.

Is that model discontinued or is the number you gave for it off a bit?

Sorry, it is a G0484. I corrected the original post.

It is in the shop now and I spent about four or five hours cleaning up and lubricating. Still more to go, but it looks nice. Can't find my camera or I would have had a picture of the forklift with mill stuck in the mud.

I have a question for anyone else with this model (G0484). On top of the gearbox there is a short piece of tubing mounted with a right angle fitting. It is about 1/8" or 3mm ID and about 6 inches long. It goes nowhere, just sticks out there. There is an oil fill hole next to it. Anyone know what this if for. The instructions do not mention it.

I believe that is a gear box vent. I have the same type of mill but mine came from Penn Tool. I believe you will be very happy with it. It is a very capable machine and with a good machinist is capable of doing some really nice work. I have added a dro and x axis power feed which really helped out a bunch. Later on I built a power drawbar for it from pictures I'd seen on the net and some of my own ideas.

It is a nice mill: the Grizzly has a nice group of features like it included tilting head, the X axis power feed, and a motorized column. The latter is really nice as I saw last night while cleaning it before hooking up power. I had to manually crank up the head and that was a real PITA.

Yea, now accessories to be made. I haven't checked yet, but I suspect it is like all the other imports in that the Z axis is really set up in mm instead of inches. I really want a Z axis readout for accurate depth settings. I have an import digital depth gauge and I think it will be pressed into service. X and Y readouts would be nice too, but they can wait a bit. And I need to make a tramming device to check the column.

    Still haven't found my camera.

It's a "cousin" to my new G0519 and from the looks of things, you'll be pretty happy with it. Came within an inch of buying the 0484. Post pics when you get a chance.

I have its older brother, the 0519. I have added x and z power feeds, a VFD for the spindle, a three axis DRO and a quill DRO. I use the machine a lot. You will like having it.
