You do not need a vise, just adjust the front and back guide to prevent part rotation. You will have to hold down on the part to reverse the unit and with draw the tap. A vise will "eat" up too much headroom.

No need for a vise - at all - the three counter-bored holes in the base are there to fasten the tapping guide to a bench or a machine bed. You can hold it in your bench vise if its big enough. You can clamp it to any suitable surface.Originally Posted by Spindle
"Head-room " is not a consideration either - mostly - as the handles are hand-driven - not by a machine (spindle).
Provided that there is a bit of "down" pressure (to stop the job "lifting" off the base-plate) during both tapping and withdrawal of the tap you will have no trouble.
The usual "hand-tapping" rules apply if you are using "standard" taps.
If using "machine" or "straight-through" taps - just keep going, don't stop or reverse - until you reach your required tapping depth.
"Feel" for the job (and the tap/s) is very important as is a good "tapping oil".
