Default Tip: When bending with flame, flame follows the bend.

I wanted to make a motorcycle luggage carrier so went and bought me some nice cold rolled rod. I clamped some 1 3/4" pipe to bend around for a nice arc. Well, none of the 4 bends come out the same because of my method I suppose.

I was heating where I was bending instead of behind the bend. Heating behind the bend allows the cooler part of the rod where the pressure is applied to lead the rod around the mandrel. I was staying ahead of the bend just a tad, that left the back of the bend too cool to form around the mandrel.

Then, to end a perfect work shop session, I ran out of gas on the mig and didn't realize what was going on till I was done. Welds look like garbage, very porris and I lack confidence in them so I'll be spending some time on the grinder/file circuit.

Life's a bitch and then you get reborn. If I don't come back as a 44D bra I want to come back as a Labrador Retriever.

Welding gloves are not for welding, Common misconseption
Welding gloves are for the stupid things you do precisely 5 seconds *after* welding and the peice has stoped glowing red, so it must be safe to pickup now.

Reminds me of when I was learning to gas weld. Dropped the rod and didn't notice I was picking it up on the wrong end. Didn't know I was burning til I smelled it. Then it wouldn't shake loose. Lesson learned.

Before you start, fold the last inch of one end over. Then you'll know that isn't the hot end.
