Sorry, I very much disagree. I've run both, and when I made mine, I went with the slab and it works great. IMO, a disk this large is a waste of material, space, and awkward to fool with. Mine can sweep over 10" in a single pass. And so far it's done a 9" pass at 0.005 DOC in tool steel with absolutely no chatter and a fantastic finish. It has two bits, mostly for symmetry and (near perfect) balance. I can drop it down and use both to double my feed rate when "roughing" (ha) in a surface, then raise one a few thou for a single point finish. Oh, and the spud is 7/8", with the pocket designed to seat against the spindle nose much like some tooling systems. The R8 and spud just pulls it in and centers it in the spindle.

For what it's worth, I do sometimes use but don't really care for those as shown. Most of mine are shop made and much more massive as well as far better balanced.
