Question thinking of a new and interesting project

    Hey Guys,

Well i was surfing the web and i came along a stirling engine. Looks cool. Saw one that drove a fan. Have any of you made one. (i am assuming so). Can you give me some info, such as materials, plans, how long it might take.

I figured i would ask here because i am assuming i will have problems along the build and it would be nice to get some help.

    I made Jerry Howell's "Miser" engine. http://www.jerry-howell.com/

Think "low friction!" I found the construction to be quite a challenge because there is NO extra power. Everything has to be just right or it won't run. Assembly is finicky, too -- all part of the "no extra power so everything has to be just right" syndrome. Lay in an extra supply of patience.

most of these engines seem to be designed for room temperature applications (with not much of a heat source). has anyone built one, or have designs for one, that i could set on my woodstove to use to circulate the air in the room. the stove surface gets up to at least 400 degrees, so it should provide plenty of heat. i don't think most of these plastic and aluminum engines would survive though.

Look in the book store at the HSM site; there are two books, "Steam and Stirling Engines You Can Build", vol. 1 and 2, that have several Sterling designs.
