Default Hard facing Gear Drive Dogs

I wondered what type rod (T.I.G.) to use when applying a Hard face build up facing on worn Gear Drive Dogs in a Motorcycle Transmission? I used to have a fellow (many years ago) do this for me but he is long gone ,,,. Its for a Drag Bike application. Thankyou Mike

Madman, look at some of the hardfacing discriptions of what the rod is used for ,and if it is machinable after weldment, and go fot it....Shawn

Are you sure the guy tig welded it? I have heard of SMAW/stick and GMAW/mig filler for hardfacing but I think that GTAW/tig is limited in what is commonly available. That is not to say it doesn't exist, I just don't think tig hardfacing filler is common.

I'm not exactly sure what a gear drive dog is, but I'm guessing it is somewhat similar to a lathe drive dog. If so, it should be fairly easy to apply your hardfacing with a stick electrode. I would think that most anything from Lincoln's "Wearshield" line should do the trick. Here is a link to Linclon's site: http://www.lincolnelectric.com/en-us...x?k=Wearshield

If you feel it must be tig welded, you might try using a hardfacing stick electrode with the flux broken off as your filler.

The more I think about this, the more I am concerned that this might be far more specialized than I imagine it is... or it is far less. If I were you, I would ask some of the other race teams what they are doing. They should be able to tell you what what to do even if they don't want to share exactly how they do it. Then again, someone might just show you how to do the job properly. It never hurts to ask.

I hate to start a post with what i have done but i build race bikes for a living. May i ask what kind of motorcycle you are working on. I work on late model sport bikes and we never weld the dog teeth. It is a very common problem with several bikes the gsxr 1000 being one of them. what we do it is either replace the gears or backcut the transmission to a negative angle to pull the gears together. I'm not saying it cant be welded but that is just one more failure point in the transmission.

But as to your question i do not what rod you would use but it the dog teeth can be ground to shape so i dont see what any hardface rod would not work.
