Default I hate 2mm drill bits!

I have a bunch of 2mm holes I have/had to drill for the pedals for the sheep shearing machine.

Everything goes good and then bang. I bought 10 German made 2mm bits. Drill bit breaks off in workpiece. I was pecking and flooding with coolant. A big pain in the butt.

Either I learn to drill small diameter holes correctly or I buy a EDM!

Why are they breaking? Is your RPM high enough? What's the material?

If your using colbalt, at that size it's easier to break them. Try HSS.

Insure a center/spot hole drilled first.

I learned that even with the best mill, a drill without a center/spot hole will wander, and then that slight wander can snap the drill (or drill a hole at an angle)

Also double check that they're chucked up concentric to the spindle rotation. I have one drill chuck that works great for larger diameters. But smaller diameters tend to wobble just a little and make it too easy to break the drill.

If you are using split point bits you dont need to spot. Check your speed, good chance you are going way slow.

I was at 2250 rpm. That is as high as I can go. They were HSS. I center punched but did not center drill. Tomorrow I will try a center drill first.

I was thinking about some of the posts Brian made in his hit n miss engine build. No way I will ever build one of those small engines. Too many small holes!

I think they may be a lot worse....I use those type frequently....and any axial play leads to a break..they are very brittle..

Great for PCBs ..if you have a ridgid high speed drill. My Pollard spins at 20000 rpm when using that type of bit.
