1" micrometer with wood handle

I saw a 1" micrometer with a tear drop shaped wooden handle attached to the rounded portion of the micrometer frame. What is the application for this addition to a micrometer? Thanks Paul

Probably a millman's aka steel mill micrometer. Used to measure hot steel. The handle provides insulation. The graduations are large to read at a distance. The lock is usually a large thumb screw to use with gloves.
