    They started apprentices at about 8th grade back then spending the first six months or so on trial sweeping and doing other coolee work before being entrusted with the basicsof the trade. If those boys were on track to become machinists they could look forward to long careers at fairly good rate pay for the day.

    If they were mere boys used for scutwork then the horrors of the sweatshop awaited them.
