    Default OT: Train porn

I have noticed there are some train enthousiasts on this forum.

Last week the track operator replaced the ballast bed of a track 20km from my house, using a 1.2km long work train. There's a rather impressive video of the train itself here:

I hope my local freight rail doesn't buy one of these. The track runs by my favorite watering hole and I walk it during smoke breaks. I've got buckets of RR steel that this contraption would steal from me!

Well, I've had the chances to run some pretty complcated hydraulic equipment. That link the OP listed is about the most complicated electrical, hydraulic, mechanical piece of equipment I've ever seen. On paper and when the equipment is brand new it all works well. I'd like to see their equipment avalibility reports for that train. Nothing against the designers, engineers, and builders. But I really have to think it's a never ending maintenance money pit. A really impressive one though.

Yes, extreme temperature swings are involved. It gets cold in Minnesota as well as hot and that makes a difference. Same as here where the maximum temperature range is about 150 degrees Fahrenheit.

Have a look here for many examples of sun kinks, some very extreme.
