    Default Nylon carry strap

My wife has a sock knitting machine. She wants a storage case for it. The case is no problem but I would like to attach a nylon strap handle to the ends of the case.

What's the recommended way of attaching the strap to the wood? Use an awl to open a hole in the nylon, then insert a bolt (with washers, yadda) through the hole and into the case?

A slot in the wood at each end with a groove routed inside. Sew a loop in the strap, push loop through the slot, slip a short length of dowel through the straps loop, either glue the dowel into the routed groove, or secure a small plate over it so you can replace later if needed.

depending on style, could bring slot through the top edge to the side

    Default Strap

You could use a shoulder strap from luggage (Goodwill for a couple of bucks) or a rifle sling (there are many different kinds).

I would melt a hole through the strap with a hot pointed nail of the appropriate size. You end up with a nice hole with no possibility of unraveling.
