save a shaper

Is anyone here bidding on this machine? I don't want to see it scrapped but I don't want to run up the price for a legitimate bidder. Please advise.

I am not bidding, but just the lamp on that machine is worth $100. I can't believe someone hasn't removed it already.

Hope someone takes it home and not to the scrapper.

Doesn't sound like anyones after it, so go for it. It will clean up to be a nice shaper and has the tilting table and vise, so should end up a bargain.

A shame it's been "environmentally aged" outside for a long while.

What's the work envelope size on that?

Also, what's the dovetail shaped heavy sheet metal thingy extending from the back of the ways? That's not really PART OF the ways is it? Doesn't look like precision surfaces. ...some sort of chip catcher maybe?

Regardless, no buying interest here.

That is just the ram guard on the back. Some are sheet metal while others are cast, but non of them touch the ram itself.

I had thought initially that the tilting vise was not original due to the fixed jaw being on the "wrong" side, however it appears that is how S&W did them. I guess thats my learning done for the day.

If its close enough, it looks relatively complete and original, so I would suggest snatching it up. Please dont let that tiny bit of surface rust deter you.

I do not have the time or room to take on another project machine and agree this should be a good buy. Doubt if there is anything seriously wrong with it mechanically. Its probably a case of a change in professors from one who knew how to operate and maintain a shaper to one who does not have a clue. It's really distressing to see good old iron like this allowed to sit out and rust.

Thanks. Money, interesting work, and a good cafeteria are more than enough motivation. 6 hours sleep each night during the week, and 8 hours "sleeping in" on the weekend...think I spent too much time in the military?

I wish I would have taken pics of my lil Atlas shaper when I bought it. Absolutely nothing moved on it one tiny bit, and those are the restorations that are the most fun IMHO. Im actually getting rather bored with my current Bport because Ive been spoiled by it - the table actually moved when purchased (and most of the way through its travel too).

tdmidget - if you buy it, please post any and all moving/restoration tool porn taken.
