    Default Lathe Bearing Adjustment

I have an 1980's MacMillan metal lathe and was wondering how to adjust the taper bearings. at the back and the front of the headstock there are two large flanges held on by 4 allen head bolts. the exterior of the flanges has car bog around it due to the fact that these flanges have never been taken off. Can someone please tell me how to go about getting to the bearings and how to adjust them

    Car bog? Please enlighten me.

Why do you think the bearings need to be adjusted?

if your lathe has tapered roller bearings it probably has two "km" nuts on the back of the spindle. thats how you adjust the preload.

Post a picture of your spindle rear end.

Bryce, did you notice that you are the ONLY one so far without a location? Maybe you should list one and we might be able to figure out what "car bog" is. OR you could tell us.

The "bog " is possibly a filler to smoothe out the rough finish in the casting, as for the vibration ,not always the spindle , have you checked the motor bearings , is it a single phase or three phase , are the belts tight or stretched and whipping .
Is the vibration there for all speeds , is the lathe firmly anchored or levelled so that it doesnt vibrate on the floor.
    Lots of possibles .

mike4 is correct about the bog. sorry i dont have any pictures My lathe is level and the belts are tight. The lathe hasnt had much use so it shouldnt be the motor. im purely trying to eliminate things that could be causing the vibration. How do you adjust the nuts and how tightly should you do it up to ensure the bearings are tight?
