Default OT...I know there are guitar guys here (Les Paul question)

Hey guys...just looking for advice. I bought a used Gibson Les Paul Standard. NOT an Epi...
I've played lots of acoustic guitars over the years...but this electric deal has me stumped.
I want to take it in to get it repaired...but don't want to get ripped off.
It is very hard to tune...even with good strings that are broke in.
A couple of the strings buzz like crazy when under power. They don't do it with the amp turned off...but I'm hard of hearing and can't tell if the tune is right.
The bass string(top) just THUNDERS!!!! Maybe something to adjust in the pick up?
BTW...it has Seymore Duncan pick ups on it...don't know if they are ok or not.
It won't stay in tune well...I'm thinking the tuner gears may be worn and slipping?
The bottom tone control doesn't work...maybe needs a new one???
I really like this guitar...but it sounds kinda crappy. I have a pretty good quality new Traynor tube amp for it...12".
    Any advice would be appreciated!
    Thanks!

Maybe needs a new nut, at least that would be my first guess, Or possibly the neck (truss rod) needs adjusted, either one will cause the strings to buzz because they are too close to the neck. Also being hard to tune sounds suspicious to me also, maybe a problem at the neck joint?

    Good Luck,

I own a music store. Most likely needs a neck adjustment $10-15. This is a seasonal thing depending on humidity.

Russ, I didn't think you played with anything unless it had "Van Norman" cast onto the side of it somewhere.
