Cluasing 5913 variable speed problem

Hello everyone: this is my first post. I've lurked on here for some time, but have always been able to have my questions answered by searching previous threads.

I have a Clausing 5913 that originally had the round master cylinder. I replaced it with the newer square master cylinder because the variable speed wouldn't hold a setting from 400 to 700 rpm--it will stay at 360 (52) rpm all day long. I was certain that all of the air was out of the hydraulic system, as I had full range of travel with the pulley sheaves.

Well, after installing the new square master cylinder and getting to the point where I feel that all of the air has been bled out of the system, I have the exact same problem!!

Is my problem an indication that there is air in the system or should I look somewhere else? The VS pulleys begin to move as soon as you apply pressure to the speed control, so I feel that the air in the system is a non-issue--or am I wrong about this?

This lathe had been sitting dormant for many years, and when I purchased it, I rebuilt the entire VS system--bearings, bushings, clutch and brake, etc., except for the round master cylinder (with unknown condition of seals) and had everything working fine. The problem of not holding a speed surfaced later.

The square master cylinder that I installed was used--I replaced the three seals and the hardcoat on the piston is in execllent shape.

Any suggestions or help would be greatly appreciated.

Well, the clock spring assembly underneath the control hub was the culprit. One additional turn clockwise fixed the problem!! Thanks Webb!!
