Default Newby needing milling machine help

Hey guys....New to machining and this forum as well....I just acquired a Logan 825 lathe and a Linley milling machine.....Not sure of the model of the mill....I haven't found a pic on the web anywhere of one like it....
Now to my problem.....The head on this mill weighs a TON.......It does have the counter weight in it with a chain to help raise it,but it still needs the help of a hydraulic jack to raise it.....In order to lower it,I have to pretty much hang on it,and bang on it with a 3lb hammer.Litterally....The ways are oiled, and the gibb screws are backed out to insure they aren't too tight but it still won't budge....Anyone ever hooked up some kind of assist to raise/lower one of these monsters?
    Thanks

Well if you have the gib screws backed way out you could be causing it to bind, the counter weight should only assist in helping to raise the head, do not beat on the head find out whats binding and fix it. Put in your location unless your in the witness protection program, there may be some one close by that could help you.

Not a mill, a jig bore, meant for precision drilling/hole locating, very light milling. http://www.lathes.co.uk/linley/
