Default chuck for old Craftsman drill press

Just joined; what a great site with tons of very useful info! I'm hoping some of you smart people can help me...
I have a 10" bench-top Craftsman drill press that is about 30 yrs old, model #351 226150. It works great but I need a new chuck and don't know how to go about getting one or if it is even possible. The chuck from the press is a 10mm, part #351-615-28 and Sears no longer carries it and doesn't have any info on a substitute. ereplacementparts.com couldn't help, and Grainger said they might be able to find one that works if I bring the old chuck by but they are almost 3 hours away.
I could get the new updated 10" press with laser, work light, etc for about $125 so if getting a new chuck for the old press costs too much it's not worth it to me.
Any ideas on how I should proceed would be greatly appreciated.

Screw on or tapered mount? If screw on what is the thread diameter and pitch? If tapered, what is the mount taper?

My guess is your's is tapered

Here's how to do it. You probably don't have the tool - use two screw drivers and go slowly.

Then you can measure the taper.

With my cheap plastic calipers I got a lower diameter of .5", upper diameter of .55" and the length of the taper is approx. .68".

Sort of sounds like a JT2 short, however the length is wrong. Compare it to these numbers.

From what i see you may need a Jacobs taper#2 which is i think 7/8 inches deep. The Jacobs taper #2A is only 3/4 deep.
Is there a number on your'e chuck stating the taper?

Get a new chuck for this old drill press. It is probably a better drill press than the new ones with this stupid laser "Gimmick".

The only engraving that is on the chuck is what looks like a logo (an oval containing the letters CYC) followed by 10mm.

I would guess it's a JT2. I have an old Atlas drill press that is a JT2, and given that Craftsman and Atlas/Clausing were in bed together for as long as they were, it wouldn't surprise me that the machiens were very close to the same.
    Great metalworking project

Here is some good starter information on drill chucks. I like McMaster, in 35 years I have never had anything back-ordered. The aren't the least expensive but they are a good company.
