Thread: Craftsman Atlas parts interchangeability 6"-12"?

Default Craftsman Atlas parts interchangeability 6"-12"?

The reverse tumbler gears on my old Craftsman 12" 101 lathe are pretty worn. I've found a complete reverse tumbler assembly from a 6" atlas 101 model for a decent price, but I'm not sure if the assembly or the gears will fit my 12" model.

I've also located a set of gears so I can just buy those, but it'll actually be more expensive to buy the gears than the whole assembly.

So does anybody know if the reverse gears from the 6" and 12" models are interchangeable?

Really tend to doubt there is any chance they will fit.

Thanks. Hard to tell from the photos but they looked identical so I figured I'd ask. If I'd had the P/N's for the 6" it would have been easy to tell.

I guess I'll be buying the loose gears this evening

Some of the 10 " Atlas parts might fit your 12", I believe that the 12" had it's origins in the 10" family.

Thanks Joe. That's pretty much what I found as well. Only thing I wasnt sure of is wether the atlas parts will be steel or alloy. I'd be afraid of mixing steel gears with the zamak craftsman gears for fear of accelerated wear to the alloy gears.

I would'nt worry about permature wear on the die cast gears. I just checked my 50 year old Atlas 10" and found that all the gears in the QC box are steel as well as a main drive to the QC... 50 years and the Zimac is doing just fine.

The change gears on a Craftsman 101 / Atlas 618 are 24 diametral pitch. The gears on the 10" and 12" machines are 16 pitch.

Mine generally look good except for the 20 and 24 Tooth gears. They're pretty worn. I'm assuming its a combination of poor lubrication history and the fact that the small gears get more mileage due to the increase number of revs.

I've tracked down all but two of the gears I need. Clausing stocks them for about $40 each. If I don't find the last two in another couple weeks I'll just buy brand new ones.
