Thread: No Classified forum?

    Default No Classified forum?

Maybe I'm just having a dense moment, but I sure can't find any classified or for sale section here....

I'm thinking of upgrading to a slightly newer lathe from the craftsman I traded for recently. I've found another, newer craftsman12"x54" with accessories that I don't have yet (for $325 nontheless), and a South bend 13x5' that I might be able to get for under $1000 if I'm lucky. I was hoping to research what mine and these are worth so I can make some "value judgements"....

Can't beat $325 for the Craftsman 12" if it has chucks etc. 6" Craftsman AA lathes are fetching that on Ebay.

Classified posts are not allowed in this forum. The idea is that classifieds should be posted (for a fee) in the HSM magazine.

    Gotcha, that makes sense.
The craftsman I'm looking at (hopefully picking up tonight if all goes well...) has the milling attachment, 4 jaw chuck, looks like about a hundred pieces of toolstock, and a partial collet set, drill chucks, drills and centers, change gears, and is on metal legs. It may be missing a motor but that's no big deal since I have spares. Everything is kinda ratty looking (surface rust) but as long as it's not totally worn out it seems like a good deal.

I have an earlier babbit bearing 12" Craftsman already. I'm thinking of either buying this one and keeping the tooling, then selling the lathe, or buying it and selling mine to make room/offset the cost. Whichever seems like the best way to go.

I'd LOVE to get that southbend, but I think it's probably out of the question at the moment due to space/funds. Maybe if its still around in a few months I could trade up again..... It just might not go anywhere anytime soon. I got a 250 amp Hobart tig/stick welder from the same place for about $250 (marked down from $1000) last year because it didnt' sell at the advertised price.

As long as I'm at it, I wonder about shipping if I were to sell one of the Craftsman lathes... I'm assuming that they would have to go by freight if not sold locally... Any idea on who would be a good carrier for that type of thing?

What i do not get is there are all these bs off topic posts on this site ALL the time.....why can't there be a classified for sale section of machine shop stuff? It is a machinist forum right?
may be the moderator will tell us why? (there must be a reason)

The craftsman sounds like a sweet deal. Tooling is the THING... one could easily spend more on a half-way complete set of tooling than for the initial lathe purchase.

There is a reason. This forum is owned, operated, maintained, and paid for by Village Press. Part of their income is from advertising in their magazines. They do not want to provide free advertising which could reduce their revenues. I personally think forum ads are generally very different from paid magazine ads, but I understand that policy and think it is fair.

I definitely don't have a problem with there not being a classifieds section and understand the reason. I didn't know when I asked but it makes sense to me.

That being said, I'm sure there's a way to set up some kind of classifieds, maybe along with a paid "premium" membership that unlocks additional forum features or resources?

    Hi Don,
Yes i understand and agree that but the advertising in the magazine is of a different nature. Mostly companys selling products. A classified forum for the average joe to sell his home shop stuff! None is going to take a ad out to sell a single item....
    ....
this is what the kids call a no brainer.... it will make the forum stronger

I agree with you, but then, I don't make all the decisions here. We're working on it.

So as a secondary question. Do the forum owners mind if people post links to ebay auctions for their gear?
