Help ID mystery tool please?

This is made by Starrett. It came with the lathe I recently bought for the tooling. No idea what it's for or what it is...

Anyone?

(Ignore the item at the top of the photo, that's not part of the set, though I'm not sure what it might be either except maybe some type of homemade crotch....)

They are adjustable supports, very expensive.

The parts are Starrett "Little Giant" machinist's screw jacks

Great. I just googled some additional images and it looks like I'm missing a swivel foot (though maybe they'll show up among the bucket of tooling I have).

Next, can somebody give me an example of what they'd be used for?

What about a source for replacement parts (like the missing v base, and swivel heads)

Sounds to me like a really good excuse to do some machining! :>)

Agreed. I just didn't want to ask for detailed instructions. Both the V-base and swivel foot heads are beyond my knowledge level at this point.

I'm sure I'll figure it out on my own quickly enough. I actually found two swivel feet among the bucket of toolstock. Not sure if they are for this set, but I threw them in the box to check out later.

Aside from being naturally curious, I'm really trying not to let all this stuff turn into a bunch of high priority projects... I just don't have enough spare time!

Well, you did say they were made by Starrett. They do supply replacement parts and they will sell to individuals, at least as of a couple of years ago anyway. There is a parts link on this page:

Do explore their site. They have a lot of excellent charts in their catalog. In the back.
