Default Hobbyist in need of some intro advise

I'm looking for advise about desktop cnc equipment that may be used for both wood sheets and various types of sheet metal. I have a background in graphic design/prepress/die lines etc (mostly vector based) and some metal smithing skills. Im looking to cut intricate antiquity designs later to be assembled into various crafts.

Any suggestions on some older models to get my feet wet? Not looking to get into routers and 3D projects just yet.

    Thanks, Kevin

To give an informed answer it would have to be known what the largest area you want to cut in (sheet size) and what type/size of metal?
This would decide whether you go with a router gantry or a mill.
It sounds like you want a ready to go machine rather than DIY project?
Also depends to some extent where you are located?
Also check out the CNCzone for a DIY site, and some ready built.
    Max.

Something like a shop bot or most other cnc routers will do that. Though if you want to do metal you really need something like a mist coolant system to keep things cool. That does not mix well with the typical MDF bed on routers.
