    Post dc motor

i picked up 4 115 dc motors that work from a body of mine i wasa going to use one for a table lift for my oversize drill press but a friend told me they were dc and couldnt use them?
what do you used then ??

You'd have to get AC motors. To use the ones you have, assuming they're not the old universal type that ran on either AC or DC, it would be necessary to rectify and filter the 115AC to get 115DC. This involves large rectifiers and filter capacitors that can handle the running, and more importantly, the starting current of the motor. Starting current can be 3x running current. An isolation transformer is needed from a safety standpoint. Used AC motors are plentiful and cheap, compared to all that other electronics to make the DC motors work.

Becareful when you select the voltage rating for the capacitors and rectifier. Although your AC source is 115V, this is rms value. The peak AC voltage is actually somewhere around 165V, so your rectifier and capacitor should be rated at least for that value. Also, don't make your capacitor too large since this can cause your circuit breaking to trip as a result of the high inrush current.
