I acquired a burke #3 Horizontal mill last night.
I have been looking around on the Internet for information about this mill. I found quite a bit of info on the #4, but very little on the #3. For the most part it looks like the #4 but has no provisions for motor pivot on the back, as do the #4s I have found pictures of. There is also no mounting location for the table feed pulley bracket and the table doesn't look as if it would accept one. The spindle ends only protrudes beyond the rear bushing enough for the retaining nuts and not enough for the pulleys to drive the table feed. All ways seem to be if fair shape and all movement is smooth. There are some bosses cast into the table and knee assembly that I can't figure out what they would be for and can find no pictures of machines with them. I got this machine with out the pedestal and with out a drive system. I did get a fair amount of tooling and the pivoting vise that goes with it.
Does anyone have any information on this thing that they would like to share?
Also what speed range and in what steps should I target when designing a drive system?

The Cast basses can be seen in BurkeNo3_UnderTable1.jpg one on either side of the cross feed screw and to the left of the vertical feed screw there is a long tube like boss.
Thanks,
Richard
