Default OT West Dubuque High School Technology Club

I hope you don't mind, but I thought I would share the activities of a local high school technology club. I started this club back in the fall of 2016 to compete in the http://challengewisconsin.org/ competition. As I was discussing the idea with school administrators I commented that I had a mill and lathe to help make some of the parts, depending on what equipment the high school did or did not have. At that point, the prinicple looked at me and said, "You need to see our brand new shop...

You walk in and there is a banner showing the local businesses that donated equipment:

They had the typical stuff, manual mills:

    Lathes:

You start to get a sense of how cool this shop is once you see the welding equipment:

The icing on the cake is the CNC equipment:

    Mill:

    Lathe:

Pretty sweet for a local public high school. Thanks again for the businesses donating equipment.

We got a group of kids grade 9-11 signed up for the first year. We started with rough sketches on the white board:

Fabricated a rough plywood base to ensure the driver would have decent ergonomics:
(pay no attention to the spelling of "design" these kids are smarter than that...)

I worked with the kids to develop some CAD designs for the frame in AutoDesk Inventor

I also dusted off some old automotive chassis engineering books to figure out the ackerman steering linkage geometry

We decided to go with two steering bars (similar to a skid steer) so that it was easier for the driver to get in and out of the kart in an emergency.

We also wanted electric start...which entailed me benchmarking a Briggs and Stratton starter gear with a dial caliper and 6 inch scale:

WDHS didn't have MasterCAM yet, so the local community college NICC was nice enough to machine the starter sprocket for us:

And it ended up working really well

Part of the idea for the club is to expose students to vocational skills, so we do use a bit of manual stuff to bend the tubes and notch tube ends.

As with most projects, we were behind schedule the entire time... we did a presentation with a half finished car as a display

Our competition is pretty serious, here is one of the more "engineered" designs we are competing against:

But most designs are simple and unique:

I got the idea from the club from when I was in high school in Michigan. I competed in high efficiency electric go kart competitions back in the 90's. That's me in the center...approximately 150lbs ago...
