Default OT: Entire lead roof of English church stolen

"About 20 tonnes of lead was taken from All Saint's Church, Houghton Conquest, Bedfordshire, over "a prolonged period of time", police said.

The theft was discovered on Tuesday and police believe the thieves posed as tradesmen to gain access to the roof."

Second thought - it might be for the better, does the church have well water?

how bright are the kids in that neck of the woods? maybe they did everyone a favor?

The number of tombstones around the church tells me you hit the nail on the head.

You're not alone. Metal plaques are routinely stripped off of gravestones here. The last rash was discovered on Veterans Day when the cemetery sees high traffic.

And then there's the cretins that shoot to hell every sign they can out in the forests, etc. The BLM (Bureau of Land Management) has taken to printing them with the American flag in the corner to try and appeal to the vandals' sense of patriotism.

Stealing copper gutters has been an issue, stealing A/C units for the scrap value has been an issue. Both involve little money for the thieves, but a large outlay of cash to replace for the theft victims.

At least a few thieves have gotten their last surprise when cutting live high voltage wires.... Apparently they figured that gloves and plastic handle covers were good enough protection against 30 kV. It was not.

Read from somewhere that catalytic converter theft from cars have been some sort of problem in parts of US. One catalytic converter scrap value was something like 100 usd and possibly lot more if you can sell it as a spare.

The most insane scrapping I've heard was stealing bricks from standing abandoned houses in the rustbelt. Literally just taking the wall. There was a 99% Invisible podcast called Dollhouses of St. Louis https://99percentinvisible.org/episo...uses-st-louis/

And couple of years ago someone stole 1.7 kilometers or bit over mile of railway tracks in here. Damn that is hard way to "earn your bread"!
Railroad tracks(2) weight something like 100 kg per meter so that is 170 tons of scrap metal!
