Thanks to all so far, I suspected there was not a significant difference among the various off brand suppliers, but a reference from those that actually have experience to me at least, is invaluable. Jim

I also recently bought a bunch of BXA tool holders from Shars for a BXA Phase II wedge and they are great:

I have about two dozen tool holders from CDCO and they all work well.

I cut it off twice and it's still too short!

Same here. Is the repeatability perfect, probably not but for a manual lathe that really isn't a big an issue. I have over 30 holders now, all of them are well made and the only problem is that the screws, from various suppliers, are different. That just means having to use different Allen keys but that isn't a major concern.

I only ones I have found that are too big in the dovetail are US made Armstrong holders. They most likely fit ther tool post just fine but the 2 I have dont work well the Aloris tool posts I have. I have 4 B size Aloris tool holders I got at a sale that fit so tight they are hard to get on the tool post. I was told that Aloris changed the spec's on the dovetail at some time ?? Ken

There isn't a whole lot that can go wrong with tool holders. Either they don't fit properly or lock snuggly, that's about it. As far as the handle position that's just a tolerance issue. I've had a few Aloris holders where the slot was machine so poorly and out of square that I had to clean them up.

I buy my BXA tool holders from Amazon and they all work fine. Again the set screws are garbage and need to be replaced. I consider them a good deal at $20.00 each.
